Sick/Fit notes

You must give your employer a doctor’s ‘fit’ (sick) note if you’ve been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave. This includes non working days such as weekends and bank holidays.

If you are off work for 7 days or less, you do not need to give your employer a fit note or proof of sickness from a medical professional. When you return to work your employed can ask you to confirm your absence, this is called “self certification”. Your employer and you will confirm how this is done, whether that be by filling in a form or sending in your details of your sick leave via e-mail.

There is a national online system for getting a Fit note for the purpose of self isolation. You do not need to contact or see a GP for this. Please click here.
